With the track having enjoyed a previous facelift three years ago, the Ekurhuleni Metro said a further upgrade was necessary.
“The track was upgraded in 2014, but the specifications did not allow for International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) class 2 standard,” said Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson.
“It also needs to be pointed out that in Ekurhuleni, only the Germiston athletics track has an IAAF class 2.
“After completion of the upgrading, it became clear that the demand by schools for recognition of national records required an IAAF class 2 standard.

“More and more school events were hosted at venues outside Ekurhuleni.”
He said challenges were also experienced with the top layer of the surface done in 2013/14 where water penetration caused damage to specific areas of the track.
“The intent of the upgrade done at present is to rebuild the track to IAAF standards and to upgrade the field items so they also comply with IAAF standards.
“After completion, the track will be submitted for registration with IAAF as a class 2 track.”
