United, Owls suffer away defeats

Springs Rugby Club completed the sweep of Boksburg teams after an epic duel with the Boksburg Rugby Club during which Springs emerged as 51-46 victors.

The half-time score in the try-laden clash, played in Springs, was 27-19 to the home side.

Owls vice chairman Sean Scheepers commented: “Dumb mistakes cost us again. Decision-making let us down as well but the guys are still confident.”

East Rand United assistant coach Colin Lloyd echoed Scheepers’ sentiments following their nail-biting loss away to Vereeniging.

Vereeniging took the spoils 35-33, overturning a 23-22 half-time deficit.

“I don’t think they (Vereeniging) deserved the game, at the end of the day we were the better team. There were three to four tries on offer in front of the try-line but we were let down by our handling,” he said.

“I’m very happy with the performance; it’s on a good level. Finishing and our handling are what we need to fix and we should be fine.”

Comments from both camps are calling for the Owls and United to be more ruthless in sharpening their finishing and the ability to close out games.

Both teams have lost winnable matches in recent weeks, but trust them to trim the rough endings in their respective games ahead of the fast-approaching local derby at Prince George Park.
