Cricket: Boksburg, CBC suffer heavy losses

Round five of the new Eastern Cricket Premier League season will be one that both local outfits Boksburg and CBC Old Boys will want to forget as quickly as possible and move on.

Both local sides played well but were up against better opposition on the day.

Kwa-Thema stunned Boksburg at their Prince George Park home with a six-wicket win while CBC were blown away by 116 runs by Kempton Park in Kempton Park.
Both fixtures were on Sunday, October 30.

Boksburg were sent to bat first by Kwa-Thema skipper Itumeleng Ntsoane after the pre-match coin toss.

Tyrone Cameron (69) and Adam Forbes (31) led the hosts to their impressive 205/6 total but Kwa-Thema were not to be denied.

The visitors’ Sibusiso Mkhathini led the chase with his knock of 58 runs before Kwa-Thema overhauled the target in 49 overs for the famous win.

Meanwhile, Old Boys suffered in the face of a rampant Kempton batting order.
Sent to bat first having lost the coin toss, the home side ran the Old Boys bowling attack ragged.

Opening duo Jarad Alder (105) and his captain, Johan Fourie (103) combined for 205, making a mockery of Old Boys’ highest score of 80, which came from skipper Nicholas Lockyer.

Ryno van der Merwe (unbeaten 42) and Marius Lubbe (15 not-out) finished off proceedings for the home side on a healthy score of 330/4 in their allotted 50 overs.

Lockyer’s knock offered resistance during Old Boys’ batting innings, and Bryce Parsons (47) to a lesser extent in a game that otherwise got away from the visitors before they even started batting.

They finished with 214/8 in their 50 overs. Kempton’s Jurie Snyman, Brandon Harwood, David Jacobs and Gavin Ralph took a brace of wickets apiece.

“Never fun being on the losing side regardless of contributing or not,” lamented Lockyer, referring to his 80-run contribution.

“At one stage we were looking like we might chase 400 but Willie Bernhardt and Casey Arnold brought it back nicely to keep them under 350.

“Also a big contribution to their runs was our fielding, it was nowhere near as good as we would have wanted it to be playing against Kempton, and the boys know it’s a proper cricket game every time we play them.

“Craig Parker towards the end also played a little gem of an innings but it was a little too late.” – @SabeloBoksburg
