Local pupil catches deep to finish fourth in fishing competition

Hoërskool Oosterlig pupil Dylan Lange and his two teammates, Luke Coetzer and Michael Joubert, agonisingly missed out on a medal position when they finished fourth at the annual deep-sea fishing u-19 National Junior Inter-provincial Championships.

The game fish tournament, which was recently held at Shelly Beach, in KZN, saw more than 10 inter-provincial teams battle it out, with Lange and his teammates representing South Gauteng.

Quizzed on the outing, the matriculant said: “We caught some good fish after the first day of competition, and we were in the lead on the first and second days.

“On the third day, the other provinces started to catch up and we were lying in third position on the last day, before ending up fourth.

“It’s a bit disappointing not winning a medal, but it’s an improvement on last year, when we ended sixth.”

Lange was also selected to skipper the South Gauteng team, a role he filled last year and at u-16 level. He added that it’s one of his greatest achievements in the sport.

“Being asked to captain the side again meant a lot, because it shows that the province has trust in me and my ability to lead,” he said.

The 18-year-old, who’s affiliated to the Makaira Game Fishing Club, in Alberton, was introduced to the sport by his father as a six-year-old.

He’s also a prominent rugby player for his school and plays in the hooker position. – @SabeloBoksburg
