Tommy set to fire at Gunslinger

Thomas ''Tommy Gun'' Oosthuizen will headline Real Steel Promotions' latest boxing event, dubbed Gunslinger, when he faces Daniel ''Billy the Kid'' Bruwer for the vacant WBA Pan Africa title, on August 27.

The highly anticipated showdown, which will unfold at the Birchwood Hotel, will mark the return of both fighters to a South African ring.

The undefeated Oosthuizen will be stepping into the squared circle for a competitive match, having been out for approximately a year, while Billy the Kid returns following a hiatus spanning approximately two years.

Quizzed on both fighters going into the fight, Real Steel Promotions promoter André Thysse quipped: “Tommy is training very hard, he’s at his training camp with a caretaker who monitors him all the time.

“It’s been well documented that he’s been battling with drugs these past few months; he comes from a dark time, but he’s clean now, he’s been clean for months.

“He’s very motivated and we’re doing our best to help him.

“Daniel returns after working on some business ventures with his wife. He has never lost in South Africa as a light heavyweight.

“He moved up to cruiserweight and the guys there were too big and strong, so he asked me to take him back to light heavyweight and he’d show me what he’s made of.

“The winner will be rated on the WBA ratings again and the loser will challenge Ryno Liebenberg for the SA Light Heavyweight title.”

The night’s supporting main event will see the dominant Patrick Mukala facing off against the dangerous Khayeni Hlungwane, in what Thysse described as ”no pushover”.

“Patrick was supposed to fight Lee Dyer for the South African Super Middleweight title, but his trainer wants Patrick to make money first.

“Khayeni has knocked out the likes of Flo Simba in the first round, so he’ll be no pushover. This is a step-up for Patrick, who I love to work with.

“He’s a hard worker and I’m still looking to organise a title fight for him – even overseas. I want Real Steel to make him a champ; he’s got the qualities.”

The Gunslinger bill, which Thysse admits is the strongest he’s seen in a long time, also features some intriguing under card bouts, featuring his unbeaten son Brandon, and foes Roarke Knapp and Joshua Ndou.

“All the guys Brandon’s fought were making their debuts and you just never know with guys making their debuts,” Thysse said.

”With >Siyamcela Mntwana, however, he’ll know what he’s getting himself into. Siyamcela has five wins, all on points, so that tells you that he’s not a strong puncher, and Brandon can take a punch.

“I want to see whether I’m making a mistake or pushing Brandon too hard with this one.

“If Roarke Knapp and Joshua Ndou fight as well as they do on social media, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.

”It can become the most important fight on the night apart from the main event – but it can certainly overshadow the supporting main bout.

“We’ve got a very strong bill, every boxer knows what he’s in for.”
