Boksburg boasts with another Baby Bok

The Advertiser recently reported that Blue Bulls forward Hendre Stassen had been selected as part of the 36-player provisional Junior Springboks training squad ahead of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Manchester, England, in June.

But Boksburg has another Baby Bok who’s part of the 36-man squad set to be trimmed one more time for the final group which will be on the plane to the United Kingdom.

Enter Free State Cheetahs starlet Mosolwa ‘Senkie’ Mafuma.

The left-winger is currently with the squad which is being taken through its paces at its training base in Stellenbosch.

Quizzed on being part of the squad, for the very first time, the former St Benedict’s man said: “Well it’s really something to play for your country, so the feeling is unbelievable.”

He says when he learnt of his selection, he was least expecting it because he went from high school one moment to representing the country the next. “So it’s a jump, and I’m very honoured and proud.

“I never went to a big school known for rugby, so this is the first time I could be recognised,” he said.

The training squad is currently busy with contact sessions and their next assignment is against Western Province Academy today (April 26) before they face Western Province Rugby Institute on May 6.

The Baby Boks will then face the Golden Lions Under-19 and U-21 sides in Johannesburg on May 13 for their first warm-up match, before meetings against Maties in Stellenbosch four days later and the SWD Eagles in Oudtshoorn on May 21.

Coach Dawie Theron and his assistants are set to slice the squad when preparations conclude, and asked whether nerves are a factor in his game ahead of the final squad announcement, Mafuma said: “You can never be too confident but I’ve got faith that I will make it. I back myself.”
