United prove too strong for Sasolburg

Try-happy East Rand United put Sasolburg to the sword in a 44-13 (half-time 22-8) win in Sasolburg on Saturday in a Valke Peregrine League clash.

Derrick Sampson’s charges again scored seven tries in a game, emulating their showing against VUT the previous week where they also crossed the whitewash on seven occasions.

Liam Lackay (brace), Duane Brown, Piet Mnguni, JP Fleming, Gary Nkomo and Cameron Lentoor, who can’t stop scoring, all took turns to dot down as United scored 14 tries in two matches.

Halfback Brown, converted three and added a penalty as his team secured their second bonus-point win in as many matches.

Commenting on his team’s ascension back to form following an indifferent start in the Peregrine League, United tutor, Sampson, said, “We need to build a strong unity in the team; new players had to adjust to our playing style and to what I want them to do on the pitch and they are adjusting well.

“Everything came off well on Saturday, the ball must do the job. We played brilliantly. We showed how dangerous we are with ball in hand.

“I think the guys were a little nervous during the first three games or so, but the execution is improving and our fitness levels are getting there.”

The senior side completed the whitewash over Sasolburg, with United’s U-21 side running riot in a 45-13 win and the second team clinching a 19-13 victory in the day’s early kick-offs.
