Owls win nail-biter against Sasolburg

Boksburg Rugby Club kicker PJ Beukes showed great composure to slot a penalty in injury time to lead his side to a nail-biting 24-21 win over Sasolburg in their Valke Peregrine League match.

Marcell Fourie’s charges were staring at their first league defeat in the encounter’s dying minutes with the home side leading 22-21, but instead retained their 100 per cent winning record courtesy of a last-ditch kick to break Sasolburg hearts.

Fourie however, refused to be drawn into the excitement of his side possibly achieving big things this campaign, following their fourth win from as many matches.

“We are going to take it one game at a time,” said the young mentor.

“We can’t underestimate anyone, we have to keep our feet on the ground – Sasolburg was a hard game.”

Beukes contributed nine points to his team’s total as he put in a pivotal shift to maintain the Owls’ momentum.

His decisive penalty was preceded by three conversions as he maximised tries by long-standing halfback Dirkie Burger, Dendre Strydom and Jason Jonker.

“We’ve got a good combination of experience and youngsters and we’re clicking as a team,” said Owls skipper Travis Howell.

“The coaches are also doing a great job as well as the club’s committee, which is backing us; things are looking great for us.”
