CBC Premier XI survives Spurs scare

Visitors Actonville Spurs couldn’t quite match their superb bowling showing with their batting as they narrowly went down to title contenders, Christian Brothers’ College in an Easterns Cricket Premier League clash on Valentine’s Day.

The home side, which was asked to bat first, stuttered throughout the batting innings and struggled for any solid partnerships, but eventually managed to walk away with a 48-run win.

Captain and opener Shaun Liebisch, was sent packing without making any runs, while opening partner Dylan Bennie walked for four.

Mark Pearce’s presence brought a calming factor for the home side behind the crease and he re-steadied the ship with his half tonne to finish with 53.

Craig Parker also produced a notable showing before finishing with 34.

The home side was eventually bowled out for 149 after 41 overs as reliable hitmen such as Bennie, Wickus Germishuizen and Nicholas Lockyer all struggled.

Most part of CBC’s struggles with the bat came in the form of Spurs’ Farhaad Oomarjee, who gave arguably the best bowling performance in a single match this season thus far. Oomarjee produced a Man of the Match performance with the leather and finished with 6/24 in eight overs.

True to his position, Spurs captain Kyle Degambur led by example as he opened the batting innings before top-scoring for his side.

The skipper played his part, scoring 35 runs before his dismissal.

Spurs’ wheels, however, soon came off when its leader left play.

None of the team’s remaining batsmen managed to put pressure on the scoreboard, apart from Ridwaan Daya (22), as CBC’s bowling attack picked them off.

The home side managed to defend what was seemingly a vulnerable total of 149 against a quality side in Spurs – as they limited Degambur men to 101 all-out after 37 overs. – @SabeloBoksburg
