Botes makes SA hockey team

Sunward Park hockey player Spencer Botes has been chosen for the South African u-18A side that will participate in a tournament in Australia next year.

Botes (16) earned the prestigious selection while on duty for his Southern Gauteng u-18 team at the recent inter-provincial tournament in Bloemfontein.

Southern Gauteng finished the tournament in third place while Botes was named the tournament’s top striker.

The grade 11 St David’s Marist Inanda pupil has been playing provincial hockey from the age of nine and currently plays for Wits University’s first team. Botes boasts 120 caps for his school’s first side and has 73 goals.

He’s also featured annually for Southern Gauteng since the age of 10 and after starring for Eastern Gauteng u-12 as a nine-year-old.

Botes’ other accolades include winning the Boden and Aitken tournaments. – @SabeloBoksburg
