Boksburg karate sensei heads for All-Africa Games

South African Team Kata champion Sensei Marius Madgwick has earned selection by SASCOC to represent the country at the upcoming All-Africa Games ,in Congo-Brazzaville, between September 4 and 19.

The latest edition of the games will be the 11th of its kind and will see more than 4 000 athletes from more than 40 countries competing in 22 sporting codes.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the All-Africa Games since its inception in 1965.

The selection is the latest milestone on the résumé of the Sunward Park Goju Karate Academy’s sensei, who is also a Zone 6 Team Kata champion, a Commonwealth Team Kata champion and a Continental Championships silver medallist.

Team South Africa will be made up of 209 athletes who have been selected across 15 sporting codes, and will include only 18 karatekas.

Madgwick and his kata team will be competing in the Team Kata event. His selection represents the first time in the Sunward Park Goju Karate Academy’s history that one of its athletes is selected for the All-Africa Games.

“We are extremely proud to have him as our chief instructor,” read a statement from his club.
