Owls give PG Park a last hurrah

The Boksburg Rugby Club ended their Peregrine League campaign on a high with a 31-24 win over Klerksdorp at Prince George Park.

Four tries and a perfect record from the boot by the in-form fullback PJ Beukes, helped the Owls down the visitors with a bonus point win on Saturday, August 1.

It was a perfect day for the club with its u-21 and second team sides setting the tone for a dominant and entertaining rugby showcase.

The Boksburg u-21s brushed aside Klerksdorp in a 49-10 win with the second side coming out on top with 17-12.

“I think the team started to gel nicely at the end of the season,” said Owls premier XV captain, Travis Howell.

“We woke up too late and let many close games slip by early on in the season, so we just came short of the semi-finals. Next season I think Boksburg is going to be a strong team and a force to be worried about.”

Coach Stephen Nel echoed his skipper’s sentiments.

“It was difficult to get the young okes together and get them to make the step-up to first team rugby,” he said.

“The boys were starting to look good towards the end of the season. We have to work hard for next year, we’ve taken a step in the right direction and the team will look more or less the same next year.”

Despite the indifferent campaign which saw the Owls manage just two wins from their 10 games, Nel added that he’s happy with what he’s seen from his team.

“We knew it was going to be a tough season but some of the guys surprised me. A few put their hand up at the end, so the season actually went better than I had expected.”
