ER United completes Benoni double with 12 point win

A brace of tries by outside centre Jackie Jonkers helped the East Rand United rugby team to power past Benoni in their Merlin League clash, in Benoni, on Saturday, July 18.

United led 23-18 at the half-time break before going on to win the absorbing encounter 45-33.

It was United’s second win in as many weeks against Benoni, after they were victorious in the reverse fixture between the two sides, winning with 29-15 in Reiger Park.

The match’s pattern also followed that of the reverse fixture, with the sides’ producing a close contest in the first-half, as only five points separated them when they went into the half-time recess.

And, as happened in Reiger Park on July 11, Derick Sampson’s men pulled away from Benoni in the second-half, scoring 22 additional points to Benoni’s 15.

Both sides picked up a bonus point for scoring four tries (United five, Benoni four).

With the win, United have all but secured their place in the play-offs, which are scheduled to kick-off on August 15.
