Mboyane defends national pride at TKO boxing event

Klaas Mboyane produced an efficient display of boxing to defeat Tapiwo Tembo in their 10-round main event clash at The TKO boxing event, on Friday, June 26.

Mboyane, whose win over the Zimbabwean improved his professional record to 18-10, won via a split decision at the glamorous event, at the Birchwood Hotel.

Two of the judges scored the fight 97-93 in his favour, with the third calling it 96-94 for Tembo.

A clash of heads in the second round saw Tembo sustain a cut near his left eye, which made his mountain-to-climb that much higher against the 32-year-old ring-savvy former SA champion.

With neither fighter able to land the killer blow inside the distance, the bout went into the judges’ hands as Tembo (32) fell to a record of 8-4.

Dlamini, Molose in disappointing draw

Walter Dlamini and Tebogo Molose both failed to make a serious claim to becoming the Gauteng middleweight champion as the two fought to a lacklustre majority draw.

With neither boxer managing to take control in the early stages of their 10-round middleweight bout, the contest turned into a tired slugfest and it was apparent that it was going to go the distance.

Two of the judges scored the fight 95-all, with the third official calling it 98-92 in favour of the lanky Molose.

The well-matched boxers exchanged clean strikes in the latter rounds, but these were few and far between, and the draw was probably a fair result.

The Gauteng middleweight title remains vacant.

Thunder strikes in first round

Hansie ”Thunder” Carr floored Daddy Mpinga, from the Congo, in surprising fashion in the first round of their junior middleweight fight.

Spectators hadn’t even made themselves comfortable on their seats to view the fight before Carr delivered the knockout blow in the 39th second, without even breaking a sweat for the win.

The star-studded event was attended by the very animated Ekurhuleni executive mayor, Mondli Gungubele, Isibaya’s Vusi Kunene, Itumeleng Khune and Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula, to list a few.

Other results:

Catchweight: Jade Karam and Nigeria’s Yomi Shokunbi (pro debutant) fought to a draw.

International welterweight: Jason Bedeman beat Congolese Raymond Kupula via TKO.

Featherweight (women): Raider Muleda beat Nathaline Bania via unanimous points decision, after six rounds. – @SabeloBoksburg
