East Rand United too strong for VUT

The East Rand (ER) United ran in three tries to Vaal University of Technology’s (VUT) one, to complete what turned into a comfortable 20-13 victory for United, at the Reiger Park Sports Arena, on Saturday, May 23.

United, based in Reiger Park, were spurred on by a stalwart performance by captain Jonathan Botha, who scored two tries alongside Reagan Fourie’s dot down, in the Merlin League showdown.

Botha was at the centre of most of his side’s attacks, carrying the ball solidly and getting United over the advantage line.

United also used the rolling maul to great effect and cashed in from their weapon, as two of their scores came from the set-piece play.

“I’m happy with the boys’ performance,” said ER United chairman Desmond Adams.

“We’re really improving game-by-game and we’re still in a building process.

“The u-21s and the second team are also improving, which is good for the club.”

United’s u-21 and second sides also won their matches, as United completed a clean sweep over VUT. The u-21s eased to a 30-12 win, while the seconds emerged as 31-27 victors in a much closer encounter.
