Local pool master takes aim at world champs

Boksburg’s own Pieter du Toit is part of a team of seven pool players who will jet off to Blackpool in England to represent the country at the 2015 World 8 Ball Pool Championships.

Following their participation and outstanding performances in the South African National Pool Championships in recent years, the seven earned themselves a call up to represent South Africa at the world meeting, to be held from June 19 to July 1.

Du Toit has been playing on the national stage for the past 12 years. He was selected as part of a 10 man singles league last year, which covered competitions throughout the country.

He’s also featured for the Eastern Gauteng Pool Association (EGPA) for more than a decade.

With the EGPA, he’s been crowned SA champion on numerous occasions.

Asked what the selection means to him as a player, the Witfield resident said: “As a player, being selected to represent my country took my breath away.

“Knowing that from all the years, hours of playing and practising has developed a talent within me which I believe wouldn’t have materialised without dedication. That’s what being selected means to me and I want to continue with an achievement that will make South African pool proud.”

The 8’s Pool and Sports Bar Pool Club owner, who started playing the game at the age of 13, also shed light on how he keeps his game at its sharpest point.

“For myself, it all started as a casual sport, putting in a few hours of practise a week, participating in competitions, getting involved in league pool.

“As the competition levels got more challenging, one has to start putting in two to three hours or more of practise per day to eventually get to the level I now compete in,” explained the 38-year-old.

“I believe owning my own pool club over the past nine years has given me the edge of additional practising time and has now paid off with this rewarding opportunity to represent my country.”

The club, which has various teams playing in the EGPA’s Open and Veterans Leagues, welcomes any pool player, playing pool league or interested in starting to play the sport.
