Ekurhuleni Sports Award to showcase top local talent

The metro is set to reward excellence and appreciate the talent of local sports stars at the annual Ekurhuleni Sports Awards.

May 27 will see the Alberton Civic Hall transformed into a glitzy venue where the executive mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele, will honour sportsmen and women who represent South Africa on international stages.

Germiston’s Fran Hilton-Smith is a nominee in the outstanding sport administration category.

“This year the interest showed by members of the public and various sports federations was overwhelming and the adjudicators were faced with a challenging task to select the finalists from the scores of nominations,” said the metro’s spokesman, Themba Gadebe.

Three nominees have been selected for each category and the winners will be announced during the dazzling ceremony which will commence at 6.30pm.

Following in-depth deliberations and careful consideration during the adjudication process, the sports stars below have been selected as finalists in various categories:

* Outstanding sport administration:

Gussie Barlett –Wrestling (Brakpan).

Fran Hilton-Smith — Football (Germiston).

Martin Daniel Saaiman –Golf (Kempton Park).

* Outstanding sport official:

Darrel Herbert — Golf (Boksburg).

Maggie Dicks — Athletics (Brakpan).

Russell Ian Sim — Karate (Edenvale).

* Team of the year:

Kwa-Thema Disability Club — Football (Kwa-Thema).

Ekurhuleni Karate Kata Team — Karate (Boksburg).

Norkem Park High Basketball Girls Team — Basketball (Kempton Park).

*Sport federation of the year:

Ekurhuleni Basketball Association (EBA).

* Primary sport school of the year:

Laerskool Rynfield (Benoni).
