Western Province make clean sweep at baseball champs

Western Province completed a whitewash of finals victories in the junior section of the National Baseball Championships, at the Boksburg City Stadium, on Saturday, April 11.

The day marked the conclusion of the week-long championships, which kicked-off on April 4.

A total of 35 provincial sides from all over the country participated across 12 fields at the baseball jamboree.

Province’s u-12A side defeated their Easterns counterparts 14-3.

The u-15 final was contested by the same teams and the result was also the same as the men from down-under emerged as convincing 12-6 victors.

Their u-18s completed Province’s dominance as they disposed of Gauteng A in an 11-9 win.

There was a silver lining for local sides though, particularly the Easterns u-18 team, as two of their players were chosen from the tournament to represent team South Africa in the u-18 World Championships, set to be held in Japan, between August 28 and September 6.

Travis Hammond from the Boksburg Cardinals and Christopher Bruyns from the Benoni Indians will join the number 29-ranked SA side, which will face the likes of Cuba, Canada and South Korea in their Group B.

Western Province was also crowned champions in the final of the senior section following a 7-2 victory over Gauteng A. – @SabeloBoksburg
