Vereeniging blunt Owls’ claws

It was not the way the Boksburg Rugby Club’s premier XV were hoping to kick-start their Valke Peregrine League campaign – especially coming at the back of impressive results in their pre-season preparations.

The Owls, fresh from humiliating Kempton Park in a 62-5 hiding, last month, in their final pre-season friendly match, were humbled by an efficient Vereeniging side in their first league encounter of the season, at their Prince George Park home ground, on Saturday, April 11.

The rampant visitors allowed the Owls to breach their defensive line only once in the 45-7 massacre.

Vereeniging effectively ended the contest in the first half , by scoring four converted tries to go into the half-time break with a healthy 28-0 lead.

The visitors added gloss to the score and were out of sight in the second half, as they outscored the hosts 17-7.

Deon Hendriks, Koos Bosman and Rudi Routenbagh ran in tries for their side, with Danie Malan and Len van Vuuren both grabbing a brace of scores.
