Boksburg crowned champs of Promotion League

Talismanic batsman John Haywood hit a half-century before finishing with 82, as the Boksburg Cricket Club sensationally blitzed to the Promotion League title, with a convincing 127-run victory, away to Bakerton, on Sunday, March 15.

Their comprehensive victory against Nigel a week earlier had handed Boksburg a chance to dream big after being placed third on the log, only two points behind log-leading Nigel with a game in hand.

Len Meyer’s team needed no second invitation as they dealt with second-placed Bakerton to claim the title on the last day.

With the hosts opting to bowl first, Boksburg made full use of their opportunity behind the crease. Haywood, Boksburg’s opener, started it all when he hit a boosting 82.

Fellow opener Michael Holtzhausen solidified the early advantage with his 24 as the first wicket produced a combined solid 106 runs.

The middle and bottom order chipped in to add to the early score as Boksburg went on to finish with a challenging 200 all-out after 47.3 overs.

Bakerton, who were also well in the run-in for title honours coming into the match, surprisingly never threatened to spoil their opponents’ path as they crumbled early into their innings.

Boksburg’s bowlers put the afternoon’s outcome beyond doubt, with a determined performance with the leather.

Meyer led by example with his numbers of 3/5 in three overs, while teammates Holtzhausen, Herman Meyer Junior and Carel du Preez claimed two wickets apiece.

Bakerton finished with 73 all-out in 21.3 overs.

“I have to say the fielding on the day was exceptional,” said Meyer.

“Everybody stood up when it mattered most; I’m extremely proud and chuffed with the Boksburg boys.”- @SabeloBoksburg
