CBC’s top order flatten Windies

CBC Old Boys’ Premier XI continued with their devastating form as they beat KwaThema (KT) Windies by 135 runs, to earn a bonus-point win on their home CBC ground on Sunday, March 1.

The match saw the return of the home side’s captain, Willie Bernhardt, who, due to ‘flu, failed to travel with the squad to Benoni for their previous nine-wicket win over Northerns.

Windies captain Peter Vonya won the toss over Bernhardt and sent the hosts into bat first; a decision that allowed CBC to thrive.

The home side got up and running with Wesley Coulentianos and Akshay Maharaj, as the pair set the tone for their side’s eventual massive score of 240 in their allotted 50 overs.

Coulentianos reached the half-century mark for the second time in two weeks, in his impressive total haul of 73, with Maharaj adding the extras with his score of 28.

Fellow top order batsman Wickus Germishuizen also stood out with the bat, smashing 62 to give the home side a solid foundation.

CBC finished with a loss of seven wickets in their innings.

The challenging target put up front for the Windies put them under pressure to get a solid start, but their openers crumbled early in their innings.

Albert Mohlala and Earnest Mbalane fell for 17 and 15 respectively, before Moses Dlile (13) and skipper Vonya (6) walked back to the stands from cameo appearances behind the crease.

Welsh Mavumengwane offered a sign of resistance with his score of 20, but it all went pear-shaped for the Windies thereafter, and the visitors were eventually undone for 105 after 27.3 overs.

CBC bowler Craig Parker married a good batting showing from his teammates with another devastating personal bowling outing, with impressive numbers of 5/24 in 7.3 overs, including one maiden.

Parker’s haul made it 10 wickets in two weeks for the bowler.

The local side enjoy a bye this week, before concluding their season with a heavyweight home clash against reigning champions Kempton Park. – @SabeloBoksburg
