Boksburg duo complete Trans Agulhas Challenge

Boksburg inflatable boat racers Desmond Potgieter and Ruan van Tonder completed the podium of the latest edition of the Trans Agulhas Challenge (TAC).

They finished third overall in the Blue Print Class in a time of 10:46:50.

Stefan Lindique and Tony Ingram won the race, and they were followed by duo Wimpy Ackerman and Whitey Louw, with both pairs finishing in times of 9:52:05 and 10:26:50 respectively.

The race, which is widely known as ‘the world’s toughest inflatable boat challenge’, covered a distance in the region of 600km, in a space of five days, and saw more than 30 teams enter.

The grueling contest was hosted by the Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club and started in Plettenberg Bay on December 28, and ended in Strand on January 1.

Day one saw the beginning of the challenge, with stage one running from Hobie Beach until Santos Beach in Mossel Bay – a stretch with spanned 188.5km and was also the longest leg of the race.

On the second day, the boats had a checkpoint at Vleesbaai and Gouritz River Mouth before finishing at Stilbaai main beach.

The total distance of stage two was 86km.

Day three saw straight-out racing, covering a distance of 161km, stretching from Stilbaai to Struisbaai main beach.

The total distance covered on day 4 was 135km.

Boats headed out from Struisbaai and checked in at Die Damme, Pearly Beach, Uilenkraalsmond and Gansbaai, before finishing in Hermanus.

The final stage of the challenge, which stretched over 131km, began in Hermanus new harbour.

The first teams eventually arrived in Strand on New Year’s Day where the winners were crowned.
