Titans win battle of the Highveld

Cricket fanatics gathered at Willowmoore Park, in Benoni, on Sunday, February 1, to witness the Momentum One Day Cup clash between The Unlimited Titans and the Bizhub Highveld Lions.

The Titans, batting first in glorious sunshine, posted a score of 255/9 in their 50-over innings before storm clouds formed overhead and an afternoon downpour left patches and puddles on the Willowmoore outfield.

That delayed the game by some two hours, as ground staff grafted to get the match back in action.

For the Titans, it was opening batsmen Jacques Rudolph who made the early yards.

The left-handed former Protea batsman held firm to score 77, off 105 deliveries, in a 161-minute stay at the crease, while his teammates tumbled around him (at one stage the Titans were 146 for five).

Number-seven bat Qaasim Adams helped to add some respectability to the score, as he blasted 59 off 56 balls, to set a target of 256 runs.

The heavens opened in Benoni soon after the Lions openers came to the wicket and the sparse Willowmoore crowd was required to exercise patience as match officials expressed concern about some of the water that had accumulated in places.

When the Titans fielders re-emerged to play again, a revised target of 149 off 20 overs was implemented and the match effectively became a T20 affair.

The Lions found themselves in trouble with the willow early on, when captain Stephen Cook, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma and Neil McKenzie lost their wickets cheaply.

Recently retired Protea Test-batsmen Alviro Petersen and Thami Tsolekile knuckled down to revitalise the innings, but their efforts would be in vain, as the Lions reached their 20 overs with a score of 136, 12 runs shy of the target.

The day was a proud one for Easterns player Grant Thomson, who picked up three wickets for 35 runs in four overs.

The former Benoni Northerns Cricket Club all rounder, made his Momentum One Day Cup debut in the Titans’ win against the Cobras, in Cape Town, on Friday, January 30, and helped ensure the victory on Sunday, with his three-wicket haul on the home turf where he has played numerous matches.

The win now sees the Titans climb up to second position on the log and almost certainly ensures a semi-final spot for the franchise.
