Boksburg trounce Wattville in Haywood show

Boksburg Cricket Club’s opening batsman, John Haywood, struck a century as the Prince George Park outfit embarrassed Wattville with a 201-run victory, at Willowmoore Park, in Benoni, on Sunday, January 25.

Having won the pre-match coin toss, Wattville captain Nhlanhla Msibi sent the visitors in to bat first in a decision that badly backfired for the hosts.

Haywood, who shared the opening duties with Michael Holtzhauzen, was eventually dismissed for 125 runs from 90 balls, to virtually win the encounter for his side in an exceptional innings.

Fellow top-order batsmen JP van Staden (34) and Freddie Whitehorne (24) added the extras, as the visitors bulldozed their way to an impressive 276 in 49.4 overs.

Faced with a mountain to climb, Wattville, in response, buckled from the onset as they lost early wickets consecutively.

Top order batsman Sibusiso Skosana finished as his side’s highest run-scorer ,with 11, before the visitors were bowled out for 75 in 19.4 overs.

In the bowling stakes, Boksburg duo Carel du Preez and his skipper, Len Meyer, excelled as they claimed a hat-trick of wickets, respectively.

Next for Boksburg is Etwatwa, at home, on Sunday, February 8. – @SabeloBoksburg
