Time to gear up for the Dis-Chem Ride for Sight

The 27th edition of the prestigious Dis-Chem Ride for Sight will be held at the Boksburg City Stadium on Sunday, February 15.

Ride for Sight is one of the most popular and enduring cycle events on the local road cycling calendar. Dis-Chem Pharmacies is once again on board to make the event a huge success.

The 116km Dis-Chem Ride for Sight has been selected as a seeding event for the Cape Cycle Tour.

For novice cyclists, the shorter vita-thion 62km challenge, which takes place in conjunction with the longer 116km event, offers all the thrills of the longer ride with far less sweat and tears.

Ride For Sight started in Benoni 26 years ago and was moved to the current venue due to the lack of a suitable venue in Benoni.

Over the past 26 years, the event has raised over R4-million to help the international search for treatments for retinal blindness. All the proceeds will be donated to research into retinal degenerative conditions such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Macular Degeneration (MD) and dozens of other rare and devastating forms of retinal vision loss.

Race secretary Claudette Medefindt said, “We don’t compromise on safety, security and the cyclist’s well-being, but with the help of our sponsors and the hundreds of volunteers who make this event happen, we are able to contribute significant funding to genetic eye condition research in South Africa.”

Retina South Africa needs about R2-million to bring international clinical trials to South Africa.

This will bring the hope of sight to thousands of young South Africans affected by these genetic eye conditions.

Online entries for the event are now open and will close on February 2.

To enter go to https://www.cycleevents.co.za/road-events/dis-chem-ride-sight-2015/.

All cyclists who enter the donation draw (minimum R20), stand to win special draw prizes worth over R100 000, and all these extra donations will be matched by the Dis-Chem Foundation. – @SabeloBoksburg
