Boksburg claims convincing five-wicket win over Avion

The Boksburg Cricket Club sealed a convincing five-wicket win over Avion in their Promotion League clash, at Prince George Park, on Sunday, January 18.

The result means the PG Park outfit continue their impressive form this year, following their win against Duduza, in a Crossover League encounter, on January 11.

“We had a good preparation crossover game and the guys know we cannot afford to lose any games this season,” said Boksburg skipper Len Meyer.

“The bowlers all bowled well and the spinners also did very well.

”The batting could improve; many of the top order batsmen threw their wicket away. We just never should have lost five wickets chasing 111.”

Indeed, the hosts watched Avion reach 111 before bowling them all out after 30 overs.

Opening batsman Brandon Harwood was the star for the visitors, with a 33-run innings.

Meyer took three wickets, while teammate Herman Meyer (junior) followed suit with a hat-trick of wickets of his own, to complete a fine day for Boksburg’s attack.

Opening batsman, John Haywood claimed two wickets.

Avion were not going to surrender their mark without a fight, however, and immediately got stuck into the hosts’ batting order with tight bowling.

Haywood’s opening partner, Michael Holtzhausen, received his marching orders with just two runs, before the former was dismissed after 23 runs.

With pressure building early on within the home side’s batting order, in came JP van Staden (23) and Freddie Whitehorne (33), and they calmed matters with their combined half-century, before Juandre Jordaan’s unbeaten nine saw his side through.

Avion’s Leo Jacobs stood out in the bowling stakes for his side, with his 3/22 in seven overs.

Asked to comment on the win, Meyer added: “We had a discussion after the game, to sort out the small issues with our batting, but we look forward to a good second-half [of the season].

“The team are very positive and enjoy playing; we are going out fighting now.” – @SabeloBoksburg
