Batsmen bulldoze bowlers in Benoni

The Unlimited Titans and Bizhub Highveld Lions met in Benoni from Thursday to Sunday.

Four days of Sunfoil Series cricket between The Unlimited Titans and Bizhub Highveld Lions petered out to a subdued draw, as both teams performed well with bat in hand, at Willowmoore Park.

It was the Titans’ wicketkeeper-batsman Heino Kuhn who was the stand out with the willow for the home side, in the match that began on Thursday, January 15, and ended on Sunday, January 18.

The opening batsman faced 515 deliveries in a dogged, unshakable innings of 244 not out, in a batting stand that lasted just short of 12 hours.

When the umpires called for the end of play, on day four, the Titans had scored 550/5 declared in reply to the Lions’ first innings score of 485/7 declared.

Kuhn looked calm and resilient at all times during his long stint at the crease, as he struck 20 boundaries and a massive six in his solid display.

The wicketkeeper enjoyed lengthy partnerships with Cobus Pienaar (66), Roelof van der Merwe (66) and Qaasim Adams (101) on his way to his double century.

In the Lions’ batting innings it was the experience of captain Stephen Cook that shone through as he notched up 122 runs.

The Titans remained in second place on the Sunfoil Series log, while the Lions (in first position) came into the encounter with a 16-point lead over their Gauteng rivals.

The batting points the Lions accumulated in the match ensured that the Titans would remain in second position.
