Haywood, Meyers lead Boksburg over Northerns

The persistent rains over the past few weeks have caused unwelcome disruptions to a number of everyday proceedings and events.

The Eastern League club cricket matches which took place on Sunday, November 16, were no exception.

Following showers from the previous Saturday (November 15), cricket pitches around Ekurhuleni were left wet when Sunday cricket game time came by, including the Prince George Park playing surface, where the home team, Boksburg Cricket Club, from the Promotion League, claimed a relatively simple win over Benoni Northerns, from the Premier Reserve League, in a crossover encounter.

With the soaked wicket delaying proceedings, the clash got underway at noon and the two skippers, Len Meyer for the home side and Jaco Kruger for Northerns, agreed to play it as T20 encounter instead of the normal 50-over per side version.

Following a toss-loss in pre-match proceedings, Kruger and his troops were sent to bat before losing all their wickets for a fragile 81 after 13 overs.

Despite losing two early wickets in successive order, a John Haywood-led performance spurred the home side to 83/2 after 19.1 overs, handing them an eight-wicket win.

Boksburg’s performance was capped by the Herman Meyers show, in the bowling stakes, with Meyer junior taking 4/14 after four overs and Meyer senior also needing just four overs to claim his 3/18. – @SabeloBoksburg
