Boksburg u-17 crowned ELFA Cup champs

Boksburg Football Club’s u-17 side beat bitter rivals Germiston in the final to be crowned ELFA Cup champions following a 3-2 cliff-hanger at the Germiston Stadium on Sunday, September 21.

The away side raced out of the blocks and broke the deadlock inside the opening five minutes through winger, Ndumiso Mazibuko, before Germiston leveled matters on the half-hour mark.

Half-time score was one-all.

The opening stanza did not pass without controversy, however, and saw Blues’ coach Samuel Cosmas red-carded, forcing the away side to finish the game without its mentor.

“I didn’t do or say anything malicious,” said the coach.

“I was just alerting the ref’ of Germiston’s tackles on our players, because I felt all the calls were going against us. Whenever they (Germiston) committed a foul, they got away with it, but when we committed a foul, the ref’ blew. So I was just telling the ref’ to watch out.”

The Blues carried their momentum after the restart and restored their lead through a Keegan Africa penalty on the 55th minute.

It took the homeside 22 minutes to again equalise and peg the Blues back, 2-2.

With the game heading for a stalemate finish, Boksburg forward Wesley Mokhese ensured that there would be one more dramatical episode, with his last gasp, adding a goal from a corner-kick inside the last minute, handing the Blues the win.

The away side finished with 10 men following Misharck Bortey Moket also receiving a red card.

“I’m satisfied with the win,” said Cosmas.

“The boys stuck to our pattern which is a 4-3-3. The boys are very good with this structure, and I would love to work with them for many more years,” added the Nigerian-born mentor.

assistant coach, Ernest Seforo also paid tribute to the victory.

“Since the coach took over, there’s been a lot of improvement from the boys. They have been performing well and have gained a lot of experience.”

The Blues thumped Pule Stars 9-0 in the quarter-finals in a match that was stopped in the second-half because of its one-sided nature.

The team also extended its gratitude to the u-17-side’s parents and Mr Robin Swiegers for all the support. – @SabeloBoksburg
