EFC returns to Carnival City

Africa’s biggest MMA show returns to Carnival City’s Big Top Arena for EFC 34 on Thursday, October 2.

The venue will enjoy its fourth and last edition of the show for this year, having also hosted the first show of 2014 in February, followed by editions in May and July.

An EFC lightweight championship bout will headline the show, which will see challenger Sibusisu ‘The Monster’ Mdoko taking on champion Leon Mynhardt.

When asked about his opponent at a recent EFC interview, Mdoko said: “I have a lot of respect for Leon. I can’t take anything from him, he is a great fighter. I have been watching him for a long time; he used to be my hero when it comes to K1!

“But this time he is coming up against ‘The Monster’; I am going up there to trade blows with him. He must expect a very tough opponent and a tough fight.

“I am taking that belt home to Cape Town.”

The champion could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile, undefeated bantamweight champion Demarte ‘The Wolf’ Pena will be vying to stretch his fight record to 10-0 when he defends his gold against Francois Groenewald, who recently took to Twitter to deliver a swipe at the champion.

“Training for ‘The Wolf’ – taking your belt will be as easy as taking candy from a kid,” read the tweet.

Pena did not respond on Twitter, but when contacted by EFC for his comments, he said: “He’s just another guy with hopes and dreams, just like everyone else who thought they could beat me.

“But that dream will end. I’ve done this so many times that I know what it takes to be the champion.”
