Club Nedbank dominates CGA Cross-Country Championships

Xolisa Tyali won the Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) 12km cross-country race in the men’s senior division at the Boksburg City Stadium on Saturday, August 16.

The Nedbank Club runner, who was tipped as one of the favourites to cross the finish line first, lived up to his billing to conclude a successful season in a time of 36 minutes.

Tyali was closely followed by club mate Derocious Makhobalo, who finished 45 seconds behind the champion.

Sibusiso Nzima, also from club Nedbank, shared the podium with Tyali and Makhobalo to ensure a Nedbank clean sweep with a time of 37:00.

In the women’s premier 8km race, Lebo Phalula led the way in a photo finish with Nolene Conrad to clinch the gold-medal position in 26:40. Conrad settled for silver in 26:42.

Lorraine Novela completed the podium in 26:46 in the exciting race.

“This is by far the greatest season of cross-country running,” said chairperson of CGA Cross-Country Steven Khanyile.

“The commission is proud of the outcome and would like to thank all the athletes who participated and making this season a success.”

The day also saw the selection of the provincial team for the upcoming SA Championships in Cape Town on September 13. The team will be announced during the first week of September. – @SabeloBoksburg
