Muller helps team SA to 4x100m silver

Boksburg swimming star Caydon Muller anchored team SA to a 4 x 100m silver medal behind Australia during day two of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, on Friday, July 25.

The feat improved the team’s swimming total to two silvers and three bronze.

Olympic champion Chad le Clos, who’s aiming to become the most decorated swimmer in the Games’ history, kept his seven-medal campaign in tact with a blistering 48.53 first leg to give the hometeam a leading start.

Roland Schoeman stretched the lead before handing over to Leith Shankland, with the hometeam looking set to claim gold; but Australian world champion James Magnussen had other ideas.

He ate 0.65 seconds into SA’s lead, leaving the fourth leg perfectly poised.

It came down to Muller, 19, versus Cameron McEvoy.

Muller, who maintained the lead until the turn, surrendered the number one spot, but managed to hold off England to secure silver in 3:15.17.

McEvoy spearheaded team Australia to a new Games record of 3:13.44, reducing the previous of 3:13.92 they set in Delhi four years ago. -@SabeloBoksburg
