Craven Week: Valke fly flag with pride

According to Kwagga Loubser, who formed one of the four coaches who guided the u-18 Valke side in this year’s Coca-Cola Craven Week in Middelburg, the team have a lot to be proud about despite falling short in the week-long tournament.

The schools rugby tournament, which was won by Eastern Province following a 25-7 victory against SWD, ran from July 14 to 19.

The local side played four games against the Pumas, Boland, Leopards and EP CD; winning three and losing against Leopards.

“We are happy to win three out of the four official matches, although we were very disappointed with our loss against the Leopards after winning 62-10 in our reverse match against them,” says the coach, who hails from EG Jansen.

Asked about the overall performance from the team in the tournament, Loubser said: “The guys played very well, we’ve got a lot to be happy about; three of our players got picked for the 55-man SA Schools squad, namely Nico Peyper, Hendre Stassen and Marco Jansen van Vuuren.

“Full-back Martin van Wyk was one of four players that scored five tries during the tournament, while our fly-half Forrest Roos was one of only six players that scored 40 points or more.”

The 22-man Valke squad included nine players from Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen and one from Hoërskool Voortrekker. – @SabeloBoksburg
