Boksburg host Brakpan in derby showdown

It’s third versus second in the Valke Peregrine League as Kaufela Boksburg host G5 Metals Brakpan at the Prince George Park (PG) Stadium this Saturday, May 31.

The local foes renew their rivalry having both come out victorious in their last fixtures respectively, with The Owls registering a 30-23 away win over Vereeniging and Brakpan, clinching a 27-21 triumph in Klerksdorp.

With all six teams in the league having played their first three matches, leaders Springs and Brakpan, are the only two teams who remain unbeaten with 15 and 14 points respectively.

The Owls will be looking to tarnish the PG Park-bound visitors’ 100 per cent record and leapfrog them into second position.

Brakpan, however, will be motivated with the knowledge that should Springs slip-up, who lead the log by just a single point, they could be at the summit should they clinch victory or a draw at least, come Saturday.

In another possible but unlikely scenario, should Willie Smith’s men achieve a bonus point win and prevent Brakpan from getting two bonus points (from scoring four tries and losing by seven or fewer points), the men from PG Park would find themselves on top of the log, should Springs slip.

Either way, there’s much more than bragging rights to play for, with first spot on the log up for grabs.

“It’s one of those games where the guys lift themselves up,” says Boksburg assistant coach, Fillip Lemmer.

“It’s always personal when we play Brakpan and it’s going to be a war as always.”

Boksburg lies in third position with 11 points, four points adrift of leaders Springs, who’ve collected maximum points from their first three matches.
