Stone crumbles under Silvermann’s onslaught

Jarred Silvermann beat local boxer Stone van Aswegen by unanimous decision, in what was one of the most anticipated showdowns on the Boxing Explosion's fight card at Carnival City, on Thursday, October 31.

The taller Silvermann had the upper-hand in the closing stages of the eight-round bout, in what was otherwise a closely-contested welterweight fight at the Big Top Arena.

All three judges scored 77-75, 77-75, 78-74 in favour of Silvermann.

The fight started slowly, but Silvermann eventually landed some damaging strikes in the second round, which saw blood and bumps emerging from Van Aswegen’s face.

Van Aswegen threw powerful strikes of his own in an absorbing fourth round which saw a momentum-swing in Van Aswegen’s favour.

However, the blonde Silvermann re-assumed ascendency in the later rounds, using his superior height advantage to land clean and damaging straight rights which took their toll on a tiring van Aswegen.

Silvermann underlined his dominance in the later rounds by dancing around, much to the amusement of his corner, before slugging it out and exchanging punches with Van Aswegen, who refused to back down.

In the night’s other eight round bout, Warren Joubert defeated Masterd Mangalaza by unanimous decision in a match that went the distance.

Joubert took control of the junior welterweight bout in the middle and later stages and never surrendered the ascendency. The tough Mangalaza never gave up but was hopelessly overmatched.

Middleweight Gauteng champion Dwayne Combrink came out of his corner flying and threw a barrage of rights-and-lefts to opponent Daddy Mpinga without reply, forcing the referee to put an abrupt halt to the bout, at 1:18 minute into the first round.

Other results:

Junior Middleweight: Stanis Kulondi vs Vusi Bilankulu. Kulondi won by unanimous decision.

Super Middleweight: Walter Dlamini vs Hanson Baloyi. Dlamini won by unanimous decision to stretch his record to 12-0.

Cruiserweight: Deon Coetzee vs Jean Lutete. Coetzee won by majority points decision.
