Winning season-opener for Boksburg and CBC

The Boksburg Cricket Club defeated Tembisa by 93 runs at the Prince George Park Stadium in Boksburg on Sunday, October 6, for a perfect start to their season.

In a match played under furnace-esque conditions, both teams made the most of their respective running opportunities with the visitors generating most of their score via single and double runs.

Boksburg captain Marius Labuschagne won the toss and sent his team to bat first.

Boksburg piled-up 248 in their 50 overs and then proceeded to bowl Tembisa out for 155 in 37.3 overs.

Boksburg’s top order batsman, Len Meyer, was in prolific form, scoring 86 runs to set the tone for the game.

Louis Grobler (35) and Ruan du Plessis (35) contributed with good scores, making Tembisa’s mountain-to-climb that much higher.

The visitors looked promising in their early surge of chasing the target, with Enoch Makamo scoring 41 runs before being bowled out.

Kenneth Masinga was the second highest points scorer for his side with 31, and Stofel Matjita adding 22 runs, but it was not enough to topple the homeside’s target, leaving the local skipper a happy man.

“It was a good game to start the season. It was played in good spirit and our batsmen got us in a good position,” said Labuschagne.

“Tembisa brought a very young team but I’m 100 per cent happy with Boksburg’s performance.

“I can see we will have a good season.”

Tembisa’s captain Israel Hlengani was proud with his team’s showing despite defeat, and acknowleged that they were always going to have it tough by facing a more established Boksburg side compared to his inexperienced troupes.

n Elsewhere, CBC Old Boys opening batsman Wesley Coulentianos smashed 116 runs to help his team defeat United by seven wickets in Brakpan in the day’s other Premier League clash.
