CBC break BFC hearts

Christian Brothers' College Old Boys (CBC) clinched the Eastern Local Football Association Premier Cup at the Hattingh Park Sport stadium in Germiston by defeating Boksburg Football Club (BFC) 2-0 on Sunday, September 15.

BFC, who had to rely on their goalkeeper Tefo “T4” Tladi in their semi-final penalty shoot-out victory over Norkem Park a fortnight ago, did not carry through their fine form and were put under pressure in the early exchanges of the encounter.

After a nervy start to the match from both teams, CBC settled quicker, looked the hungrier and got a result from the early pressure they exerted by scoring the match’s opening goal.

CBC were not about to to rest on their laurels and continued to apply the pressure in the hunt for their second but Boksburg defended firmly to keep the scoreboard at 1-0 in the interval.

The Blues’ struggle to get going prolonged into the second stanza and CBC picked up where they had left off in the first half and kept their high tempo in quest to double their lead but the score still remained 1-0, thanks to some fine Itumeleng Khune-esque saves by their in-form goalkeeper.

The match gradually turned into an even contest as BFC put a few passes of their own together.

Their confidence rose as swiftly as the pressure they began to apply on Old Boys in search of an equaliser but CBC’s defence stood resolute.

Old Boys absorbed the pressure and scored a second against the run of play with a quick counter-attack to make the score 2-0.

The further setback did not deflate the Blues’ confidence, however, as they continued to chase the game.

A thunderous volley from midfielder Darien Maia saw a CBC defender handle the ball in the box in cynical fashion to earn himself a red card for a professional foul.

Darien’s brother Mario stepped-up to take the kick that could have possibly set-up a nail-biting finish but missed to effectively hand CBC the win.

* In the day’s early kick-off Boksburg’s division two side defeated a World Net Logistics team 2-1 in a match that saw BFC’s midfield maestro Donovon Sole orchestrate his team’s performance to great effect in a dominant midfield display.
