Councillor laments lack of cooperation to curb killings in Angelo

Ashley Hoods, Ward 33 councillor, writes the following:

Reading the latest article on killings in Angelo, I thought it important that I share some information on interventions sought from provincial and local government.

On July 19, 2017, I wrote to the MEC for Community Safety Gauteng, Nkosi-Malobane, as well as the MMC for Community Ekurhuleni, Vivienne Chauke.

While I did not receive any correspondence in relation to my request, in October of 2017 director Greg Thulare from EMPD Northern Region was sent to meet with me and a few community leaders.

Thulare from our meeting assured me he would make efforts to deal with the situation in the informal settlement and that he would arrest the situation. He was, however, very reluctant to entertain some of the proposals I put forward in my letter.

Well, it is now abundantly clear that he failed as the killings are continuing unabated and with alarming regularity.

As for those responsible for law enforcement and safety and security of that area, I really have no words other than utterly useless.

The latest crime stats released just reinforces the DA’s stance that the SAPS can no longer provide South Africans with safety and security.

Minister Bheki Cele should just admit as much. The price we are paying for an under-resourced and incapable SAPS is just too high.

We are paying with the blood and lives of our citizens and especially the most vulnerable.

The MEC’s office was also very quiet on the matter and despite efforts by DA MPL Michele Clark in province, we could not solicit any response.

The powers that are do not care or cannot execute their functions in this very crucial office of providing safety and security to our citizens.
