We need the winds of change to blow in Ekurhuleni

Howard Skeens from Sunward Park writes,

Theoretically, a new political dawn has arrived.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has made a great noise about the ANC fight against fraud and corruption. Amazing that the latter has at last recognised that under its gross mismanagement all forms of crime has flourished.

Can we honestly believe that there will be change when certain cadres Nomvula Mokonyane are still ministers – in charge of vital portfolios.

Closer to home, what do we know? To begin with, Ekurhuleni’s mayor is not a supporter of the new president (remember, he boldly claimed that he would resign if Cyril became president).

This was exciting news. Unfortunately, he refused to follow through on his promise. We can now understand why there is no real improvement in the metro. There are no winds of change blowing through Ekurhuleni.

Solid proof of this: lack of maintenance of vital infrastructure, huge provisions for and the write-off of debt and continuing fraud.

On the latter, could the mayor please explain how the new taxi rank in Vosloorus, budgeted cost R17-million, is still not complete some two years later and expenditure to date tops R50-m!

Similar situation with the taxi rank in Katlehong.

Hopefully, the winds change direction and blow clean, fresh air through our polluted metro.
