A turning of the tide

Howard Skeens from Sunward Park writes:

Reviewing the results of the local elections we see there are still numerous tunnel-vision voters in Ekurhuleni who believe the current government will lead them to a better life. Shame.

Let’s be crystal clear on a number of facts:

Firstly, we are saddled with the current government most likely being in charge of the metro for another five years.

Therefore the scourge of fraud, corruption and incompetence will continue, crowding out any chance of growth and service delivery improvements where desperately needed.

Secondly, hard-working opposition councillors will continue to be blamed for the lack of action by the government-appointed cadres in the metro.

Remember, we do not have a professional civil service. Doing their jobs competently and serving the public (who are forced to pay inflated rates to cover high payrolls) are not in the latter’s job description.

Thirdly, in the metros where the DA holds the majority there will be clean-outs. This takes time and could be costly. Improvements in service delivery and financial prudence will not happen overnight.

At least these metros have a five-year head start on Ekurhuleni

One good thing, there are fewer government cadres floating around, pretending to be councillors for the people and drawing a monthly salary for doing nothing.
