Aerotropolis or trashopolis?

I had to laugh when Gautrain CEO Jack van Zyl stood up in front of business leaders at the recent Manufacturing Indaba, at Emperors Palace, and proudly proclaimed that the areas surrounding the airport would be an Aerotropolis, with all these wonderful facilities.

Now my problem is that they can’t even keep the main roads to the airport clean.

I live in Atlasville and work at Denel.

My clients have to ride in on Atlas Road and sometimes Brentwood Park Road to get to this side of the airport.

Both these roads have had litter scattered on the verges for years now and never have I seen a single “street sweeper” or litter squad pick up the rubbish on the road verge.

Litter is a reality and it’s time the council employed more people to deal with this problem.

In the same office park and across the road are international companies and an interesting airline that only ferries the country’s elite business owners and world leaders from this side of the airport.

Are they not the very people Ekurhuleni should be wooing for investment, showing them what a world-class city this is?

Do you think they are impressed when they ride on roads in the vicinity of the airport that are strewn with rubbish?
