Are we using social media wrong?

EMPD media liaison officer Deliwe Ndlovu writes:

Is social media good or bad for us, or is it just us people who are using social media for the wrong reasons?

I have, in many cases, seen people using social media and I’ve always asked myself some questions: why some of these posts are being posted? For what good reason and what does it mean to us? Who is going to see or read these posts?

I’ve seen people posting pictures or videos of people being assaulted, someone who’s stealing something or breaking into someone’s house or car. A person will sit there and decide to take a picture or video just for social media. What happened to humanity or conscience as human beings? Why do you decide to take a picture or video instead of doing something to assist the person who’s being violated?

What if it’s you who’s being assaulted? Would you want someone to take a picture or video just to circulate it on social media instead of assisting you? I think these are some of the questions we should be asking ourselves before we use social media.

I think it’s time to bring back our humanity instead of always thinking about social media.
Let’s go back to our roots as Africans and help each other whenever we can. Let’s not turn another person’s misery into fame.
