Oosrand School expands curriculum with industry certifications

The school, known for its specialised curriculum in commerce, hospitality, entrepreneurship, and tourism, recognises the importance of micro-credentials in today's competitive job market.

Oosrand Commerce and Entrepreneurship School of Specialisation has recently partnered with B and T Solutions to equip learners with essential life skills and enhance their employability.

This initiative aims to provide learners with additional certifications to their matric certificates, and these certifications include driver’s licences.

The school recognises the importance of micro-credentials in today’s competitive job market.

According to the school principal, Peter Arendse, it is very hard to find a job if you have a matric certificate without practical skills such as a driver’s license.

“These additional skills are crucial to have as they can significantly benefit learners after Grade 12.”

Arendse pointed out that for the driver’s licence programme learners will be using simulators.

Considering that learners are expected to pay a fee for this additional training, the school is seeking sponsorships and donations to support those who cannot afford to pay for the training programs.

Arendse stated that the current office space is small, and they are planning to build additional facilities to enhance the learning environment.

“The community’s support is crucial to the programme’s success, and we are hopeful that this partnership will significantly benefit its learners and prepare them for a brighter future.”

Arendse added that the long-term program will also include awareness campaigns for learners from grades 8 to 11, ensuring that each phase is thoroughly integrated into the school’s curriculum, while the Grade 12 learners will receive actual driver training.

B and T Solutions founder Bheki Mhlambi said, “We want to skill the children and prepare them for the future.

Starting with driver’s licence code 8 and 10, we will introduce various phases including forklift and aviation licenses.

“The Simulation, Accreditation, Licensing, and Programming (SALP) initiative under B and T Solutions is designed to provide comprehensive training.

“The programme begins with the K53 introduction and progresses to professional driving courses, taking approximately six to eight weeks.“

Mhlambi said, in addition to teaching practical driving skills, the programme aims to raise awareness about road safety.

“According to Road Accident Fund statistics, a significant number of road fatalities involve young people. We are trying to avoid that by enforcing safe driving practices at an early stage.

“We are working with the Department of Education and intend to collaborate with the Department of Transport and the Road Accident Fund.“
