CBC Boksburg surprises family with full scholarship

Annually, the college awards scholarships to deserving candidates who have shown their excellence in academics, sports, leadership and cultural activities.

Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) Boksburg recently partnered with HOT 1027 FM to make a young man’s dream of attending their school a reality.

Annually, the college awards scholarships to deserving candidates who have shown their excellence in academics, sports, leadership and cultural activities.

Candidates write a scholarship exam and sit through panel interviews.

A friend recommended that Phindile Mthembu’s son, Thoriso, apply for the scholarship as he is the top student in his grade and deputy head boy at his current school.

Thoriso made it through the scholarship process at CBC Boksburg, but the family could still not afford to send their son to college despite being awarded a 50% scholarship.

Phildile runs Tholakele Centre of Hope, an NGO in Kwa-Thema that homes 43 orphaned and vulnerable children. Since 2008, Phindile has provided essential care, shelter, and protection to orphaned children in Ekurhuleni East.

Andy Swanepoel, the Hot Cares project coordinator at HOT 1027. FM and Nikita Teixeira, head of marketing at CBC Boksburg, negotiated about screening candidates for the 100% scholarship worth R600 000, which Toby Craig, headmaster of CBC Boksburg had pledged at the Hot Cares 2023 Teddython.

Upon receiving the news from the Mthembu family about their financial situation, they decided that Thoriso would receive the pledged scholarship.

The Just Plain Drive show hosted by Darren Scott, Dyl and Tara, and CBC Boksburg surprised Phindile on air with the news that Thoriso’s education would be covered with a full scholarship.

Furthermore, Hot Cares covered his school uniform and stationery needs to the value of R5 000.
