CBC welcomes new headmaster

The headmaster has served the education fraternity for 27 years.

With his 27 years of experience in teaching, Toby Craig aims to improve the academic standards of Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) as the new headmaster.

Craig took up the position at the beginning of July.

His main priority will be to ensure that the learners excel in academics and adopt the school ethos of brotherhood and excellence derived from the variety of sports and cultural programmes offered by the school.

He said he began his teaching career in 1995 as a geography teacher at Jeppe High School for Boys, where he was also a housemaster in the boarding house.

“After Jeppe, I joined King Edward VII School, where I served for 12 years. During that time, I was appointed as the head of geography, director of admissions, scholarships and marketing and in addition, I was the MIC of squash and cross-country.

“I also coached rugby and cricket and ran the Donald Gordon Boarding House for many years,” said Graig.

He mentioned he left the school to join St Benedict’s College in Bedfordview as the deputy principal in 2009.

“At the school, I ran marketing and admission and was also the head of boarding and discipline. I also coached rugby and cricket. I was the MIC of golf,” he explained.

The new principal has an energetic approach and a clear vision for CBC.

“My plan since joining the school is to offer an environment where the boys will thrive, flourish and freely express themselves. I want the boys to become the best versions of themselves.

“I will also prioritise sport because it is an integral part of the school, although I know academics are of paramount importance,” Craig added.

He said they would provide a quality education that equip all the boys at the school with the tools to achieve a bachelor’s diploma pass.

“We want the boys to qualify for a university education.

“CBC is the only school in the East Rand that offers a full bouquet of activities. The school is busy re-establishing itself as the premier sports school in the East Rand.”

He added they will be giving the learners a chance to realise their talents with the extra-curricular activities they have at the school.

“All the learners must feel safe at school and perform to their ultimate best,” he concluded.

The new principal is a passionate sportsman who plays golf and enjoys road running.

He is married to Melissa Craig and they have two boys. Their eldest son, James, is doing an economics degree at Wits University and their younger son, David is on a scholarship at Tennessee Tech in America.

Both sons are good basketball players and represent their tertiary institutions in the sport.
