Dorry is still a stalwart at Boksburg Child Welfare

Dolly Naidoo aims to keep staff morale high.

Van Dyk Park resident Dorry Naidoo has made a difference as the Boksburg Child Welfare chairperson for many years.

The 62-year-old sales representative, born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, said he was immediately drawn to child welfare when a church colleague introduced him to the organisation.

Dorry has been the chairperson for the past six years and was the chairperson and deputy chairperson between 1996 and 2011. He then took a break from the organisation until he took over the reins again in 2017.

The chairperson said the Boksburg Child Welfare had grown tremendously.

“We have expanded our services and have three offices – the Boksburg CBD, Reiger Park and Vosloorus. We also expanded our outreach programmes aimed at empowering the youth and helping those affected by HIV/Aids.”

Regarding challenges, Naidoo said membership is the biggest challenge for child welfare.

“Like many NPOs, we struggle to get people to become part of the organisation. It seems people don’t want to or cannot do voluntary work because of their busy schedules,” he said.

Naidoo said volunteers wanting to become part of the organisation should have professional skills that are of value to them.

“It would be great if retired people could become part of the organisation because they perhaps have time on their hands.”

Apart from volunteers, Naidoo said funding is another headache for them.

“The local municipality used to be heavily involved decades ago, but we no longer receive as much support from the council. We also used to get support from the Rotary Club, but they have shut their doors also because of a lack of membership.”

His goal as a chairperson is to keep the morale of the staff high.

If Naidoo could wave a magic wand, he would let people have kind hearts.

“People should assist others in need where possible.”

When Naidoo is not working for child welfare, he enjoys reading and is a family man. He is married and has three daughters and a son.
