SANBS grateful for blood donors

The national blood bank encourages the community to donate blood.

Local donor practitioner Peter Mafela reiterated that without blood donors, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) would not be able to save lives.

The Boksburg Advertiser spoke to Mafela about the importance of blood donors.

Mafela emphasised that regular donors help maintain sufficient blood stock levels.

“This ensures that blood is available when doctors require it. One unit of blood can save up to three lives. Hence, we thank those who heed the call and roll up their sleeves,” he pointed out.

The donor practitioner mentioned that they aim to recruit new donors while retaining current ones.

“We plead with people to encourage their friends and children who are old enough to roll up their sleeves for a good cause.”

Mafela encouraged the community to support the blood bank’s mobile blood drives.

“SANBS also needs more businesses and stakeholders to get on board and organise mobile blood drives,” he said.

Residents may also donate blood at the SANBS donor centre at the East Rand Mall from 10:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 15:00 on weekends and public holidays.

Donors must meet the minimum criteria for donating blood, which are as follows:
• Weigh at least 50kg.
• Be between the ages of 16 and 65.
• Be in good health.
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
• Consider your blood safe for transfusion.
• You may only donate every 56 days.
