Local designs safety app for communities

The app allows you to send distress calls to your close circle.

Witfield’s Nyasha Sinamane (26) recently saw his idea of an app that combines social networking features with emergency tools come to life.

Besides the SafeSpace app allowing users to read and post updates, a standout feature is the emergency function, where users can send distress messages.

The app enables users to send distress messages to selected friends with varying levels of urgency.

“The people in your close circle on the app will receive distress SOS along with your location. This ensures help will arrive quickly. People will immediately know that it’s an emergency if they get the distress message, unlike a normal message that can be easily missed,” Sinamane said.

Furthermore, emergency widgets on the app will also assist users in getting help in a crisis.

The widgets allow you to search for your nearest emergency location and its contact numbers, and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) feature guides you on how to handle emergencies.

Users can, for example, ask the AI feature how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and they will get a step-by-step guide on how to do it.

“The app’s vision is to help create a safer, more connected community where individuals look out for one another. The more people look out for one another, the safer the community can be,” he said.

Sinamane said persistence and friends who believed in him made it possible for him to launch the app.

“If you keep knocking on doors, you will eventually be successful,” Sinamane said.

A team, including co-founder and social media manager Brady Adolph, along with Jo’ash Munian and Vele Maphaha, who helped him to make his dream app a reality, support Sinamane.

The app is available on Google Play and iOS.
