WATCH: Reconstruction progress on bridge ruined in gas tanker blast

This project forms part of Prasa’s mission to restore its passenger rail services across Gauteng.

Work is forging ahead on the R80m project to rebuild the railroad bridge destroyed in a gas tanker explosion in Plantation, Boksburg.

While the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) remains mum on the project to rebuild the bridge, the Boksburg Advertiser recently revisited the site and noticed the extensive work done since its previous visit.

Workers were hard at work, and it is understood the project, which started late last year despite legal challenges, should be completed before year-end.

When this publication revisited the site recently, workers were hard at work to restore the rail infrastructure.

Residents and the metro had indicated they welcomed the reconstruction because it would relieve the pressure on the nearby alternative route and ease traffic congestion in the neighbourhood.
On the other hand, the metro indicated that it set aside at least R500 000 for the project to demolish and repair the municipal-owned portion of the wrecked bridge and stretch of Railway Street and Hospital Road during the 2024/25 financial year. However, it remains unclear when the metro will break ground on the project.
