Sanral to spend over R2m on repairs of accident-damaged section of N17 bridge

The damaged section was reported to Sanral in April 2022, but the processes to repair it were mired in delays due to factors including awarding contracts.

Repairing the accident-damaged section of the pedestrian bridge across the N17 in Van Dyk Park could take four to five months, while the cost could be at least R2 137 996.

This structural damage reportedly occurred when a vehicle crashed into one of the concrete beams, damaging the supporting column and the deck point, which was left lopsided. This damage left pedestrians with no safe alternative to cross the freeway.

Khavhakone Construction started repair work on the damaged section on the bridge’s north side early in July. It should complete the repairs in November if everything goes according to plan.
The scope of the project:
• Provision of a temporary access ramp for pedestrians;
• Partial demolition of the reinforced concrete deck;
• Complete demolition of the reinforced concrete columns and spread footing;
• Casting of in-situ reinforced concrete columns, deck and spread footing;
• Removal, storage and reinstallation of the steel hand railing and reinforced concrete drop-in panel;
• Extension of existing guardrails on the eastbound shoulder to protect the northern access ramp from vehicle collisions.
